The Big Kahuna – Southern California

Kohl 12/09 (who was named Ace by the shelter in Utah where he came from) was found running in Cache County and was probably abandoned after hunting season ended. He is severely emaciated (should weigh 90# and is 65#) and though heartworm is not prevalent in SoCal, because of the condition he was found in, we tested him. He came back with a strong positive so now has to undergo heartworm treatment.

Kohl a month later

Update 1/10: Kohl has gained 10# and is starting to go through heartworm treatment.  On top of that he had obviously had some kind of blunt force trauma (either hit with an object or a vehicle) as he had 5 brokenr ribs (which we discovered during x-rays to see how bad his heartworm infestation was).He won’t be ready for adoption for months due to the ongoing heartworm treatment (3 months of treatment).

He is turning into a beautiful boy, very large boned (65# when he arrived, he’s now 75# and should be probably in the 85# range eventually when he adds some muscle mass.

Kohl adores women, absolutely loves to be around them and flirts shamelessly. He’s very loving and gives kisses.   He can be mouthy (soft mouthed) and is working on learning the word “gentle” He has a very sweet disposition tempered with the typical weimaraner stubbornness.  He, like the typical weimarner, is very smart and is making great strides as he obviously had no training whatsoever.  He can use a dog door, knows sit, is working on stay and is extremely food motivated. He is good with older kids who are confident around larger dogs as he doesn’t know his own size/strength.

9/10 - He is ready to go on a 3 mile run every morning, but then he is content to nap most of the day away. He enjoys playing with other dogs, but is bossy at times with other dogs his size (i.e., he’ll push to the front for the affection.) He has visited a home (and stayed overnight with small dogs too and he ignored them and he is also cat friendly (both with inside and outside cats). Kohl lived in the country (he came from a rural part of Utah), and is adapting to life in Southern California but gets unsettled by unpredictable noises and energy, so will do best in a home without kids under age 16.

His ideal home will be with a Weim savvy person or couple with time to exercise and train him as he has made advances with his current training but needs continuing training, consistency and reinforcement. He will do best in a home that sets expectations and consistently follows through on them. Also, the best home for him will have another established dog there that Kohl can look to for guidance.Kohl is friendly with people once he gets to know them but prefers women. He is also very loving, gives hugs and kisses and thinks he’s a lap dog as he loves to cuddle and be next to you, if not on top of you. And like a typical Weim, he is happiest when he is included in being part of the family. He is big, active, and strong and is improving on leash, though still reactive to dogs barking and running by him. He loves to go for rides in the car. He weighs about 80#, is neutered and current on all shots. This silly boy with his big ears, feet and head will make anyone smile! If you are interested in meeting this boy, please contact us for an application.
